WHAT IS THE CANNONS LACROSSE CLUB

The Rhode Island CANNONS is a comprehensive, developmental club lacrosse program for players committed to playing lacrosse at a high level. The mission of the program is to enhance our players' lives through the sport of lacrosse, teaching teamwork, developing leaders, and building character.

We simply provide more lacrosse, committed coaching staff, at affordable prices. We are a US Lacrosse organization with access to all US Lacrosse has to offer including grants, training, insurance, and scholarships and financial aid for our players. Everyone Plays. Contact us to learn more.

Currently, the CANNONS has established teams at the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades, and high school teams. We believe the foundation of community lacrosse starts at the town level and RI CANNONS  teams and programs strive to compliment your local town programs to provide a higher level of coaching thru skills-based development, field IQ and game strategy for those players looking for more.

We attribute our success to our coaching staff which consists of experienced volunteers, paid coaches, and guest clinic coaches that attend our camps and clinics throughout the year and our network of similarly minded club programs, secondary schools, and college coaches.

Each team will consist of a highly experienced coaching staff.

Team rosters will consist of no more than 18-20 players to ensure ample playing time. A team will consist of 1-2 goalies, 4 attack, 4-5 d-poles which would include an LSM, and 2-3 solid lines of midfielders. (we tend to have a larger roster in the summer to allow for players who might be away or miss a tournament.)

We are committed to offering the highest level of communications throughout the season to ensure that every coach, parent, and player is informed of all club news and events.

Private Lessons - 1 on 1

Private Lessons

Private coaching is the secret to reaching the next level in sports and life. Many people get caught up in the hype of travel teams, which we think are certainly necessary for becoming a complete athlete, but just a piece of what makes a person successful. On-going Individual development and training is vital for success.

We have found that private lessons can help beginning lacrosse players feel more comfortable joining a program and help more advanced players fine-tune their skills.

Our Private Lessons provide dedicated players with a unique and dynamic approach to the sport and will help players improve their skills and develop field sense and IQ while working to enhance their strengths, perfecting fundamentals, and minimizing their weaknesses.

Private and small group lessons are structured and confirmed based on the individuals' goals, merit, and position in which they play to develop players into better, smarter athletes on the lacrosse field.

Lessons will take place in a nearby facility on or around Aquidneck Island at a mutually agreed upon time.

There is no cost to register and we will contact you for next steps.

Why Box?

Every Kid Should PLay Box Lacrosse -

John Desko, Head Coach Syracuse University

If I had my choice, I would have every player under the age of 12 play box lacrosse exclusively or at least a majority of the time -

Bill Tierney, Denver University

The skills used in box lacrosse makes for better lacrosse players on the field or in the box. Box Lacrosse is recognized as the most effective way to develop the skills of any lacrosse player. Not just playing lacrosse inside, but playing and learning box lacrosse skills and techniques is the focus of MN YBL.

10 Reasons to Play Box Lacrosse

10.FASTER PLAY | The speed is way faster than anything you would see outdoors.  It makes playing outside seem like going in slow motion

9.STICK HANDLING | Playing in closer spaces means your stick skills have to be tighter and quicker.  Your stick handling improves because there is no room for error, quite literally.

8.TRANSITION | Ball moves from defense to offense with increased speed.  Players learn quickly to breakout and move the ball up the field.

7.DEFENSIVE BODY POSITION | No D-Poles means that defensive players have to use good body position to be successful.

6.OFF-BALL MOVEMENT | Playing in such a tight area means it is that much harder to get open.  Running through people to go to goal just doesn't work.  Players learn to cut, pick and keep in constant motion.

5.GOALIES SEE MORE RUBBER | Shots come hard and fast.  Goalies see more shots in a shorter period of time.  There hands and reaction time become much quicker.

4.SHOOTING ACCURACY | Gary Gait is among many who have gone on record about the shooting accuracy that comes from playing box lacrosse.

3.REACTION TIME | Almost every point made deals with faster speeds.  A byproduct of playing faster is you have to react faster.  That means faster to a ground ball, faster in transition, faster to play the ball, faster to shoot the ball.  You name it, your reaction to it gets faster.

2.PLAYER SAFETY | When it comes to pre-season training, the goal is to get better for the Spring season, not get hurt.  Many indoor facilities boast full fields, which ultimately are surrounded by some sort of netting.  As one of the area's top orthopedic doctors pointed out, the box is a safer playing surface.  There is nothing to get tripped up on and in to.

1.PROVEN SUCCESS | You can list as many of the benefits as you want, but the proof is in the success that box players have.  Look at the most successful players over the last decade.  The majority play box in the off season.  Paul Rabil, Casey Powell, the Gait brothers.  No matter who you identify with, the common thread is that they have or still do play box lacrosse.

Testimonials

6X NCAA Championship Coach Bill Tierney, Denver University:

"If I had my choice, I would have every player under the age of 12 play box lacrosse exclusively or at least a majority of the time.  The number of touches of the ball and the ability to develop better stick skills in a game of box lacrosse far surpasses what happens on a field.  Learning how to pass and catch in traffic, understanding how to shoot, and developing a sense of physicality are all positive traits developed by the box game."

4X NCAA Championship Coach Dom Starsia, University of Virginia:

"When you watch Canadian kids score, when you see their skill level around the cage, you wonder to yourself, 'Jeez, are we teaching kids [in the U.S.] the wrong things?"

MLL/NLL All-Star Casey Powell on Box Lacrosse:

"I knew that if I wanted to be one of the best players in the world, I would have to dedicate myself to both the indoor and the outdoor game.  Playing indoor lacrosse has been a great thing for my career."
